3D Rendering in Vietnam: The Shift From 'Outsourcing' to 'Strategic Partner'
From the perspective of Hung Nguyen – CEO & Vision & Strategy Director, MR Rendering
The explosion of the real estate and architecture markets in the last decade has fueled a key support industry: architectural visualization (3D rendering). From dry technical drawings, 3D rendering has breathed life into projects, transforming ideas on paper into realistic, emotionally resonant images.
However, the 3D rendering market in Vietnam is now at a major turning point.
As someone who has been in the industry for 10 years—from an architect and teaching assistant to CEO and Vision & Strategy Director at MR Rendering—Hung Nguyen believes the era of simply "selling renders" cheaply is over. The future belongs to studios capable of becoming "strategic partners," providing visual solutions with depth and artistic value.
Here are his insights on the current state, challenges, and future of the 3D rendering industry in Vietnam.
Phase 1: The Market of "Price" and "Speed"
Looking back 5-10 years, the Vietnamese market was primarily defined by the demand for "fast, cheap renders." Studios competed fiercely on cost, and most operated more as "technical operators" than "visualization artists."
"Back then, clients just needed an image to 'see' the project," shares CEO Hung Nguyen. "The focus was on correct material representation, basic lighting, and fast turnaround times to meet deadlines. We did a very good job as an outsourcing provider, but we inadvertently created a market dominated by price."
This situation led to several consequences:
Inconsistent Quality: In the race to the bottom on price, many products lacked artistic depth and the 'soul' of the project.
Short-term Thinking: Studios focused on quantity over quality, with little time to invest in R&D (Research & Development) or artistic training for their teams.
Value Erosion: Clients became accustomed to paying low prices for an intellectual, artistic product, making it difficult to elevate the service.
Phase 2: The Transformation – When Clients Need "Emotion"
In recent years, the market has matured. Major developers, international architectural firms, and even local architects are demanding more. They don't just need to "see"; they need to "feel."
"This is where the role of the visualization artist changes," Hung emphasizes. "With my background in architecture, I understand that a successful render isn't the most realistic one, but the one that best conveys the spirit, story, and vision that the architect intended."
This shift introduces new requirements:
Storytelling: The image must have a context, characters, and activity, creating the "lifestyle" the project aspires to.
Artistic Sensibility: The 3D artist must now be a photographer, a lighting director, and a materials expert. They must understand cinematic composition, color theory, and how light affects human psychology.
Meticulousness: This is something CEO Hung Nguyen, with his love for tea culture, always values. Finesse is found in the small details: the softness of a sofa cushion, the fold of a curtain, or the precise warmth of an afternoon sunbeam. These details are what create authenticity.
The Biggest Challenge: The "Value" War
As the market demands more, the "price war" is gradually transforming into a "value war." And this is the greatest challenge for Vietnamese studios.
According to MR Rendering's Strategy Director, this value rests on three factors:
Alignment of Vision: "At MR Rendering, we don't just take a brief and execute. We sit down with the client as a strategic partner. We need to understand why they designed it this way, what they want the end-user to feel when entering that space."
The Ability to Consult (and Push Back): A valuable studio is one that dares to say "no" or "why don't we try this?" With his architectural background, Hung and his team can provide upstream consultation to architects on camera angles, lighting, or even materials to better highlight the design intent.
Consistency in Quality: Maintaining top quality for a few projects is easy. Maintaining it for every project, every time, is a matter of process and company culture.
The Future of 3D Rendering in Vietnam: AI, Real-time, and a Global Position
As Vision Director, CEO Hung Nguyen outlines three major trends that will shape Vietnam's architectural visualization industry over the next five years.
1. AI: A Tool, Not a Replacement
AI (Artificial Intelligence) is changing the game. AI tools can automate repetitive tasks like populating scenes with vegetation, placing cars, or generating material options.
"Many fear AI will replace artists. I don't," Hung states. "AI is a powerful assistant. It liberates artists from tedious technical work, allowing them to focus 100% on what AI cannot do: creativity, emotion, and strategic thinking about composition and light. Whoever masters AI will win."
2. Real-time Rendering and Virtual Experiences (VR/AR)
Clients no longer want to see static images. They want to "walk through" their future home. Real-time rendering (using game engines like Unreal Engine) and VR/AR (Virtual/Augmented Reality) are the inevitable future.
"This is a quantum leap in experience. Instead of presenting 10 images, we can hand a client a VR headset and let them freely explore every corner. It is the most powerful sales and design presentation tool."
3. From "Outsourcing" to "Global Creative Hub"
Vietnamese 3D artists are extremely talented, skilled, and technically proficient. We have long been a top outsourcing destination for the world.
"However, my long-term vision is to move MR Rendering and Vietnam beyond the 'outsourcing' label," CEO Hung Nguyen shares. "We have the full capability to become a 'Global Creative Hub,' a place where the world's top architectural firms come not because we are cheap, but because of the artistic quality, strategic thinking, and unique visualization solutions we offer."
Conclusion
The 3D rendering market in Vietnam is in a period of refinement and upgrading. Price-based competition will always exist, but the true playing field for industry leaders will be a race for value, artistry, and technological integration.
Under the guidance of leaders with strategic vision and deep professional foundations like CEO Hung Nguyen, companies like MR Rendering are not just selling 3D images—they are crafting visions and shaping the future of architectural visualization in Vietnam.
